TheEnneagram can predict this well because each type hasstrong preferences about what they want from a teamand from other team members. Here are the nineEnneagram types described in the context of what theylike from team members and how they function in teamsettings. The following descriptions are excerpts fromGinger Lapid-Bogda's new book “TransformYour Team with the Enneagram: BuildTrust, Decrease Stress, andIncrease Productivity.”
TypeOneWhy do Enneagram Ones place such a high value onteams that have talented and responsible teammembers? They believe that when people are talentedand responsible, the team’s work will be of the highestquality and also get done on time. This is important tothem because Ones want everything and everyone, including themselves, to be as perfect as possible andeverything to be done with no mistakes. To that end,Ones hold themselves and others to the higheststandards of excellence.
Type 2Why do Enneagram Twos place such a high value onteams that are warm, supportive and moving forward? That’s because Twos work best on teams that have thesecharacteristics and think others do, too. They also believethat people achieve their highest performance when theyfeel included, particularly when everyone is valued andgoing in the same direction.TypeTwo
TypeThreeWhy do Enneagram Threes place such a high value onall team members being competent, focused and goal-oriented? It’s because Threes are driven by the need tosucceed and equally driven by the need to avoid failure. They believe that teams with competent, focused andgoal-oriented members set the stage for everyone’ssuccess. Threes set specific goals for everything theywant to achieve, create efficient and effective plans forgetting there, and then move forward quickly. To them, moving forward is its own reward, but standing still is thesame as being idle.
Why do Enneagram Fours place such a high value onteam environments where everyone is self-expressive,connected and creative? This is the exact team culture inwhich Fours thrive. Fours go deeply into just abouteverything they do. This can be work, relationships, special interests they may have, or aesthetic areas suchas art and literature. They believe that almost everythinghas meaning if you just go below the surface and explorethings in depth.TypeFour
TypeFiveWhy do Enneagram Fives place such a high value onteams where everyone is capable, autonomous and lowmaintenance? It’s simply because they view themselvesas competent and capable, competence defined as beingknowledgeable and also under-standing how things work.Fives also value these qualities in their teammates.Autonomy is a professional and personal issue for Fives.Although they contribute to teams as needed, they do notlike what they consider to be excessive meetings or over-coordination. They find both to be energy-depleting and awaste of time.
Why do Enneagram Sixes place such a high value onteams where everyone is loyal, trustworthy and like-minded? Teams with these characteristics help Sixes feelcomfortable and safe. Safety is central to Sixes becausethey view the world as an uncertain, unpredictable place. There is, in their view, safety in numbers rather than inbeing an isolated individual.TypeSix
TypeSevenWhy do Enneagram Sevens place such a high value onteam environments where everyone is stimulating, equaland fun? Sevens thrive in highly engaging, exciting andpleasurable work settings. They despair in environmentsthat are routine, boring and restrictive. Sevens believe ininfinite possibilities, thinking anything is possible with boththe right people and the fewest limitations. Sevens rarelyask “Why?” Instead, they say, ‘Why not!” They areenergetic and enthusiastic and believe it is their job tokeep themselves and everyone else upbeat andoptimistic.
Why do Enneagram Eights place such a high value onteams where everyone is effective, honest and operatingwith integrity? When their teammates have thesequalities, Eights do not have to be concerned about theperformance or character of anyone on their team. WhenEights can count on their team-mates to do their jobswell, Eights believe the team can move to action witheveryone going in the same direction.TypeEight
